3rd Skin

I directed an underground performance event in Tokyo, called ‘3rd Skin’. It involved 3 models wearing custom made clothes. For 30 minutes 6 painters painted directly on the model’s bodies and clothes. The models –at the start in white clothes and bare skin - gradually evolved into an artwork during the performance.

僕は東京のアンダーグラウンド・パフォーマンス・イベントで「3rd Skin」というパフォーマンスをディレクションした。３人のモデルが、カスタムメイドの衣装を身に纏うというパフォーマンスだ。30分間で、６人のペインターが、モデルの衣装へはもちろん、肌にペイントを行った。モデルは、地肌に白い服を着ている状態から、パフォーマンス中どんどん美術作品へと生まれ変わっていった。

Each model represented a theme: skin, gender and religion. These themes where expressed with fashion because - just like fashion - our skin (racial connotations), gender and religion is often prejudiced upon and is seen as part of someone’s identity. It has is also become something you can change when preferred, like clothing.

The performance was a collaboration between fashion and fine art students from various art academies in Tokyo.

It was part of the line up of an underground performance event called ‘Paint Your Teeth’, which is held every two months in a basement in Tokyo’s red light district ‘Kabukicho’.

それぞれのモデルにはテーマがあった。肌（人種的にもともと持っている肌に伴う先入観や偏見）、性別、宗教である。このテーマを、ファッションと組み合わせた理由は、人種的なステレオタイプ、性別、宗教は、ファッションと同じように偏見を持たれるものであり、個性を表すものであり、自在に変化できるものだからだ。

このパフォーマンスは東京にある様々な美術大学に通っている、ファッションと絵を学んでいる大学生のコラボレーションだった。

2ヶ月一回ほど、歌舞伎町の地下で行われている「Paint Your Teeth」というアンダーグラウンド・パフォーマンス・イベントがあり、今回の「3rd Skin」は、そのイベントの演目の一つとして行われた。
