Vincent Ruijters .PhD. Born 1988 in The Hague, The Netherlands. Based in Amsterdam, NL.
Ruijters is an
artist who focusses on the phenomenology of intimacy and identity. His work
explores how contemporaneity shifts and morphs these phenomena. Through his art
he intends to establish new levels of understanding—and perhaps some form of ‘peacemaking’—with
these morphed bonds. The context of his work is rooted in his research on
‘Aesthetics of Intimacy’. By crossing boundaries of inner space and outer
public space, his goal is also to challenge notions of intimacy. In the form of
his work, he aims for a synthesis between the poetic, conceptual and
technological. He has obtained a PhD in
Intermedia Art at Tokyo University of the Arts.

Crimson Gilt reflects on the intertwined histories of Japan, Indonesia, and the Netherlands through the VOC. The installation takes the form of a suspended ship, based on the 1748 VOC vessel Amsterdam, recreated from a thousand knitted strips in gold and crimson. Gold represents the prosperity the VOC brought to Japan; crimson reveals the exploitation, colonialism and slavery sustained elsewhere across its trade routes. Visitors can walk through the ship’s center and experience the shifting light and colour — a journey through shared yet conflicting histories. After its presentation in Hirado, the work will ‘sail’ to the Maritime Museum (Museum Bahari, Jakarta) and the National Maritime Museum (Scheepvaartmuseum, Amsterdam), reorienting its form and perspective at each site.

Selintas Selalu is a kinetic light installation by Vincent Ruijters. The installation invites contemplation on heritage, displacement, and belonging. Looking at how ancestral culture and migration ripples into the present to shape ones constantly evolving identity. The artwork is based on the artists intensive research in Indonesia into his Chinese-Indonesian roots, finding the fused aesthetics of these cultures that define the form and materials of the artwork. A complex interplay of light, shadow, and fabric—suspended from a steel structure—envisions the shape of mixed-identity and ancestry.
Curatorial statement by Evelyn Huang

Vincent's residency was not merely a
geographical relocation but an emotional and intellectual pilgrimage to
understand his ancestral roots. His mother’s migration story is emblematic of
many Chinese Indonesians who sought refuge and a new beginning in foreign
lands. For Vincent, this personal history became a focal point, prompting him
to investigate the broader narratives of Chinese Indonesian identity. The
exhibition "Selintas Selalu" captures the essence of these
explorations, presenting a nuanced narrative that intertwines personal memory
with collective history.

Vincent's methodology during his residency was
rigorous and immersive. He engaged in extensive interviews with individuals
from the Chinese Indonesian community, capturing their stories, experiences,
and perspectives. These narratives were complemented by field research, where
Vincent visited significant historical sites and cultural landmarks. He visited
places where a hybrid culture influenced by Chinese is celebrated and became an
aesthetic standard such as Betawi, Benteng and Lasem. Group discussions facilitated
a deeper understanding of contemporary views and shared experiences, while
intensive workshops allowed for collaborative creation and exchange of ideas.
These diverse activities provided Vincent with an overwhelming flow of
information and emotional resonance, which he skillfully wove into his media
installations.

Dark red colour dominates the piece inspired
by Batik Lasem colour, displayed in seemingly thin form of clothes hanging from
a root-like steel structure. We can find hints of visual aesthetics from his
findings such as “kembang kelapa”-shaped steel and light installation. “Kawung”
shape that is common in Javanese Batik that reminds people not to forget their
origins appears to be in the foundation part of his installation. Light, shadow
and movement plays an important part as they pass the hanging clothes in the
short term as if feelings of longing can come and go in a glance. All elegantly
connected but also clashed upon one another in order to show sense of
complexity.

Stuart Hall suggests that identity is not a
fixed or singular entity but a multifaceted construct shaped by historical,
social, and cultural contexts. Identity, according to Hall, is a process of
continuous negotiation and renegotiation of meaning. Vincent's media
installations embody this concept, using visual signs and symbols to represent
the fluid and dynamic nature of identity. His artworks highlight the diversity
and complexity of Chinese Indonesian identity. Through this lens,
"Selintas Selalu'' becomes a space where identities are not blatantly
displayed but questioned and redefined. While Vincent as a diaspora searches
for his roots, Indonesian Chinese communities in Indonesia are also diaspora in
the process of building their roots in regards to decades of political
oppression and turmoil. He may not display findings of validation or assurance
in an archive-like manner, but the complex nature of identity that is more
relevant in contemporary lifestyle. As Edmund Husserl see it, identity is not only
what something is physically, but how it appears to one’s consciousness. Our
identity can focus on how we experience and perceive the essence of things. In
this sense, Vincent’s experience during his residency plays an important role
in how he identifies and relates to insights and aesthetics he found aside from
physical attribution detected in his work. The eerie feeling of meeting
strangers with shared history, the joy of sharing anecdotes about Chinese
parenting style with fellow millennials, the sense of displacement when
entering historical place of his own interest, the longing search for good
food, as common as it sounds, it is what builds his subjective relation to his
roots.

"Selintas Selalu" is a cultural
inquiry and a personal odyssey. Vincent Ruijters' work challenges viewers to
reconsider the narratives of identity and heritage, prompting a deeper
understanding of the forces that shape our sense of self. The exhibition offers
a nuanced exploration of Chinese Indonesian experiences, past and present.
Vincent's media installations stand as powerful testaments to the resilience
and dynamism of cultural identity. By weaving together historical traumas and
contemporary realities, "Selintas Selalu" creates a space for
contemplation, dialogue, and healing. It invites us to acknowledge the past,
understand the present, and envision a future where identities are celebrated
in all their complexity and richness.

"SHADOWPLAY" is a global telematic performance connecting Amsterdam and Tokyo. Two performers dance with each other's shadow from the other side of the globe in this contemporary exploration of identity and relationships. The performance will be held simultaneously in Amsterdam and Tokyo. Amanantina Jean (Amsterdam) and Daisuke Omiya (Tokyo) will dance live with each other through their shadows. The performance is centered around the phenomenology of (mixed) identity, relationships, and the influence that digital communication has on them. Shadow is used a way to express the intangibility and transformation of both one's identity as well as how someone experiences the other, when for a long period of time digital communication is the only way of social interaction. The artist Vincent Ruijters uses his personal history as his main source of inspiration. Ruijters, who has lived in Japan for over 8 years, has Chinese-Indonesian and Dutch roots. These facets of identity—that he observes as carriers of shared cultural heritage—influence all layers of the performance. The use of shadows is also inspired by the Indonesian shadow puppetry Wayang Kulit (which literally means "shadow" or "imagination").

‘Cave Inside the Body of Shadows’ is an installation centered around the phenomenology of (mixed) identity,
relationships, and the influence that digital communication has on them.
The work is a kinetic light installation that transforms the space into an artificial “reverse” sundial by means
of a revolving spotlight placed in the center of the space. Mimicking the
movement of the sun, the beam slowly travels through the exhibition space, from
left to right. The beam hits a series of suspended portraits one by one, as if
hitting the numbers on a dial. As the beam hits the portraits,
they cast a shadow and project a reflection onto the walls and floor. There is a geographical relationship between the sun's trajectory along the meridian and the movement of the beam through the exhibition space. The sunbeam highlights a specific portrait when it is noon at the
country of origin of the person portrayed.

Shadow is used as a way to
express the intangibility and transformation of both one's identity as well as
how someone experiences the other, when for a long period of time digital
communication is the only way of social interaction. Ruijters uses his personal history as his main source of inspiration. Ruijters,
who has lived in Japan for over 8 years, has Chinese-Indonesian and Dutch
roots. These facets of identity—that he observes as carriers of shared
cultural heritage—influences all layers of the artwork. The
work is also inspired by the Indonesian shadow puppetry Wayang Kulit
(which literally means "shadow" or "imagination"). The artwork’s personal phenomenology constitutes an apparatus through which
people are invited to reflect on the ways in which space-time distance
transforms perceptions of one's identity and relational world.

Chikyuchi is a virtual pet device inside an installation. Its goal is to highlight the human value of “caring,” using the mass-appeal of a device inspired by the Tamagotchi to affect climate change on the human level rather than the physical.

Chikyuchi provokes audiences to care for a physically embodied, retired and re-imagined device avatar representing the Amazon forest. The character’s health is connected to the state of the actual Amazon rainforest. This is done through a connection with API data telling the total surface area of the Amazon rainforest. Chikyuchi is in bad health due to deforestation. Although users are able to temporarily cheer up the Chikyuchis with thematically related food and games, increasing their mood status, it doesn’t affect their critical health status. It can only recover if the actual Amazon rainforest recovers. The Chikyuchis also peri- odically speak based on text generated using the transformer language model GPT-2 fine-tuned on tweets related to deforestation and global warming over a 3 day period.

The Chikyuchi ‘Fossils’ symbolize natural areas that have already been destroyed beyond a point of no return due to human activity. It uses visual language associated with the mourning and honouring of natural deities and ancestors.

Looking back to how anthropomorphic deities representing nature in humanoid forms was a way that enabled people to empathise and coexist with nature, Chikyuchi speculatively contemplates how to similarly use anthropomorphism in our current society for the same outcome. At the same time it criticizes the way we have been brought up in an environment that promotes building affective relationships with inanimate consumer products like Tamagotchi, whilst failing to promote empathic bonds with nature. Additionally, it criticises the disparity between the influence that consumers have on deforestation and climate change vs the influence of economic and political decision making.

BREATHING IN/EX-TERIOR is an installation of fabrics which uses the venue’s first floor structure. Wind blows from fans positioned strategically in the exhibition, which move interactively with the audience. With the texture and materiality of the fabric, the programming of the fans and lights, this work creates an immersive and soft experience: what the artist calls “intimacy”. At the same time, this work, designed accord- ing to the space of the venue, is synchronized with the sound of the artist breathing. This piece generates intimate breathings that inhale as artist’s body and exhale as public.【門バージョン】素 材 : 布 、ア ル ミ 、ス テ ン レ ス ス チ ー ル、木材、鉄サイズ：幅 500cm 奥行 350cm 高さ 520cm

‘DYNAMICS OF MASS CONNECTIVITY’ is an interactive installation with three displays revolving on a pole axis. Each monitor shows video conversations the artist had with friends and family living across the globe. They speak in Dutch, Japanese and English. When the audience approaches the artwork, the three displays start revolving slowly. As the audience gets nearer, the revolution speed of the monitors increase, while the video conversations shown on the display switch at a higher frequency. In close proximity to the artwork, the displays revolve at such a high speed, and the videos switch at such a high frequency, that the speech and faces from the video conversations become unrecognizable and inseparable. The faces shown on the displays blend into each other and become semi-holographic. This forms an indistinguishable, ever changing, chaotic and fractioned face.
The work contemplates the phenomena of the virtual communication that is engrained in our daily life experience. Compared to physical communication, virtual communication has different interval and proximity dynamics. This work aims to show the ‘Intimate Dissonancy’ and noise caused by this shift.
The artwork was completed a shortly before the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic and has become more relevant since the outbreak. However, for Ruijters, daily video conversations were a reality long before Covid-19. This is because Ruijters comes from a Dutch father and a Chinese-Indonesian mother; raised in Holland and living in Japan throughout his twenties. This is reflected in the diverse languages and ethnicities appearing in the video conversations. The artists relation to his mixed ancestry and fractioned ethnic identity forms the second layer of the artwork. It is an expression of the struggle of self-perception for someone with mixed ancestry or a complex identity. A struggle of simultaneously viewing something fractioned as singular.

‘Wind’ is used within music, poetry and verbal expressions as a metaphor for emotions and love. Especially within the field of Japanese Phenomenology, with its concept of ‘Qi - ’, wind is connected to emotions and love. The memories of our past lovers can be recollected - rather than visually - as sensations of wind and temperature on the body. Therefore the personal love memories of the artist are translated into ‘wind’. In order translate these memoires, the artist developed a notation system to compose wind and temperature sensations on the body, a ‘wind score’. This ‘wind score’ is derived from the structure of a musical score. This artwork is an installation in which the artist’s personal wind score can be experienced.

First the use enters the interior space of the installation. In order to feel the wind sensation on the body, the user takes of his/her coat then lies on the placed futon facing the machine. When the user lies down the lights slowly dim until the space becomes pitch black. From this point the machine next to the user’s side starts producing wind that can be felt on the user’s head and chest. The wind changes in intensity, temperature and locations of where it can be felt on the body. This sequence of wind sensations is based on the ‘Wind Score’ that expresses the artist’s personal love memoires.

“Breathing Paper” is composed of various objects from notebooks of the artist gained after moving to Japan hung on laundry hangers. They include an accumulation of “I” such as notes, sketches, texts or poems. This work also gently rotates with wind blows, and from a light bulb at the center of the hangers, projects shadows of the artist’s “I”. While the work might give a kitsch and vulnerable impression, the drawings show however a theoretical analysis that challenges a model of the private/public relationship. Amidst clumsy movements of the hangers, the drawings imply an artistic practice resulting from observations of daily life of Japan. Since, structurally speaking, the power source of the rotation comes from the very fragile papers receiving the wind, the dynamics of “intimacy” circulating between a physical sense of the wind and ordinary private life is presented as an organic but systematic structure.
